Fellowship in Gender and International Security
Application Materials
Overview:
In the academic year 2009-2010, the Women and Public Policy Program at the John
F.
Kennedy
School of Government at Harvard University will be awarding one postdoctoral
residential fellowship to an outstanding scholar in security affairs from
the United States or elsewhere working to promote basic research in the broad
area
of international security with a particular focus on issues relating to
gender. This
fellow
must
hold
a
Ph.D.
by September 2009. The fellow will hold his or her fellowship
jointly with the International Security Program (ISP) of the Belfer Center
for Science and International Affairs (Belfer Center).
For 2008-2009, the fellowship has been awarded to Dr. Megan Mackenzie, a political scientist who will conduct a comparative analysis of the existing policies and programs created to address children born of war time rape and AIDS orphans in Sierra Leone and Uganda.
In
2006-2007, the fellowship was awarded to Dr. Tammy Smith, a sociologist
with extensive experience in international human rights and development
fields.
Responsibilities:
The Women and Public Policy Program / International Security Program
Fellow will
be
expected
to
participate actively not only in the weekly ISP seminar but also
in the intellectual life
of the Women and Public Policy Program, taking part in seminars
relevant to their interests and presenting papers.
Research fellows
will also be expected to complete a book, monograph, scholarly
article or other significant publication during their
period of residence.
Stipend:
The stipend for the 2008-2009 academic year postdoctoral
fellowship is $34,000. Residential fellowships also provide
for individual health insurance, and institutional support.
