GENDER AT HARVARD
The study
of gender at Harvard exists across the University; a scholarly
thread woven through disciplines and degree programs
that connects students, faculty and scholars from all corners
of the university community. The Women and Public Policy
Program at the Kennedy School; the Committee on Degrees in
Studies
of Women, Gender and Sexuality within the Faculty of Arts
and Sciences; the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at
Harvard Divinity School; Harvard University Women’s Center—these
are all testaments to Harvard’s continuing commitment
to understanding the complex role of gender in society. Across
Harvard’s ten schools, we are approaching gender through
the frameworks of politics, policy, law, health, psychology,
art, film, history, literature, race, religion, economics,
education, family, sexuality, culture, and society; creating
a rich academic landscape for the engaged scholar. This edition
of the Guide to Gender-Related Courses at Harvard serves as
a roadmap to the University’s vast interdisciplinary
approach to gender studies and an information hub for the
opportunities and resources available.
THE GUIDE
This
eighth edition of the Harvard University Guide to Gender-Related
Courses is designed to enable students, faculty, and staff
interested in learning about gender to explore gender
from a variety of
disciplines. The guide was designed to facilitate students,
faculty, and others identifying programs, courses,
and resources relating
to the study of women and gender throughout the University.
It lists courses across the University with a primary
or secondary
focus on gender by interdisciplinary topic. Courses are categorized
by topic based on information derived primarily from University
registrar course listings and program websites. We attempt
to be as inclusive and thorough as possible, but we
are aware of
the possibility that inaccuracies or omissions may inadvertently
exist. It is also important to note that some schools only
provide partial spring course listings. Please contact
the schools or
programs directly for complete course listings and cross-registration
guidelines. Full course descriptions can be found in the
various schools’ course catalogs or on course websites.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Harvard University Guide to Gender-Related Courses was
initiated in 2000 by Victoria A. Budson, Executive Director
of the Women
and Public Policy Program and Christianna Morgan, Administrator
of the Committee on Degrees in Studies of Women, Gender,
and Sexuality with special funding from the Office of
the Provost.
The creation
of the Guide was made possible through generous support of
the Women’s Leadership Board. The primary research
of the 2007-2008 guide was done by Ellora Derenoncourt and Leah
Gordon, the primary editing by Kerry Conley, Megan Kearns, Theresa
Lund, and Nicole Carter. Design and layout by Kerry Conley.
The
2007-2008 Gender Course Guide is a publication of the Women
and Public Policy Program of Harvard’s John F. Kennedy
School of Government in collaboration with the Committee on Degrees
in Studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies program at
FAS, and the Women’s Studies in Religion Program at the
Harvard Divinity School.
