In recognition of the many strengths of Harvard Medical School and its
affiliated hospitals (Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center, and Massachusetts General Hospital), the U.S. Public
Health Service's Office of Women's Health of the Department of Health
and Human Services awarded a contract to the Harvard Medical School
to create a national Center of Excellence in Women's Health in the
Fall of 1998.
The National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health were established by
the U.S. Public Health Service's Office on Women's Health in 1996. The
Centers are based in academic medical institutions to establish and evaluate
a new model health care system that unites women's health research, medical
training, clinical care, public health education, community outreach, and
the promotion of women in health professions around a common mission to
improve the heath status of diverse women across the life span.
The Harvard Medical School's Center of Excellence (CoE) structure reflects
the fundamental themes of the CoE mission. The CoE consists of six key
programmatic areas: Clinical Services, Research, Health Care Provider Education,
Outreach and Consumer Education, Academic Leadership, and Evaluation.
The Harvard Medical School's CoE in Women's Health will provide the support
to:
1. Develop best practice models for health care for all women.
2. Broaden the use of outcome measures and patient surveys to evaluate
clinical services and patient satisfaction.
3. Expand the use of community-based primary and preventive health care
services.
4. Encourage more research into women's health, particularly issues related
to minority women's health, through expanded collaboration across institutions.
5. Create better programs and culturally-sensitive materials in women's
health to educate the public.
6. Strengthen the role of minority women in our institutions.
7. Develop mechanisms to ensure the career advancement of women in our
institutions.
8. Develop better curricula in women's health for both medical students
and house staff, emphasizing the use of new information technologies.
