Media Instruction
This section contains a wide variety of 'how-to' documentation for the StudioKSG
technologies located in classrooms and conference rooms. Please reference
this material if you would like to familiarize yourself with the equipment.

Classroom media cabinets
The StudioKSG media cabinets typically contain the
following equipment:
- dedicated Windows-based PC with wireless
keyboard and mouse
- VCR
- audio tape recorder
- hand-held remote control
- VGA cable (for laptop hookup to LCD
projector)
- internet cable (for laptop hookup to
internet jack)
within the room you will also typically find:
- screen
- ceiling-mounted LCD projector
- wall plate for laptop hookup
- overhead transparency projector
Using the dedicated computer and LCD projector

Turn on the LCD projector with the black hand-held remote control by pressing the ON
button under Video Proj Pwr.
It takes 30 seconds for the projector lamp to warm
up.

Turn on the computer as you would any computer.
Computer is located in the equipment cabinet.

Lower the
screen by using the controls on the wall.
Controls should be located just to the side of the screen location.
Some rooms have a manually operated pull-down screen.

Under Sources on the hand-held remote, press DED CPU.
The computer should be projecting onto the screen. If
it is not, press the DED CPU button again.

Use the wireless mouse
and keyboard to control the computer. If not used for a few minutes
they may go into sleep-mode, in which case you can simply click the mouse a
few times or press the space bar to respectively wake up the mouse or
keyboard.

When done, turn off the computer first. Then turn off the LCD projector with the hand-held remote by pressing OFF under the
Video Proj Pwr. Raise the screen and return all
equipment to the cabinet, paying attention to place the wireless mouse in
it's recharging cradle.

Using a laptop with the LCD projector

Turn on the LCD projector with the black hand-held remote control by pressing the ON
button under Video Proj Pwr.
It takes 30 seconds for the projector lamp to warm
up. This must be turned on first to assure proper connectivity.

Lower the
screen by using the controls on the wall.
Controls should be located just to the side of the screen location.
Some rooms have a manually operated pull-down screen.

Remove the VGA cable from
the cabinet.
The cable should be very sturdy and gray in color.
|
|

|
Connect one end of the VGA
cable to the laptop's VGA output (it should be the only port of that type).
Connect the other end of the cable into the matching wall plate jack labeled
LAPTOP.

|
Optional If you need
internet access from your laptop, remove the internet cable from the
cabinet. Connect one end of the internet cable to your laptop's
network port. Connect the other end
to the wall jack which is labeled INTERNET.
For Novell access, the laptop must have a Novell client installed.

Under Sources on the hand-held remote, press LAPTOP.
|

Turn on the laptop. It is important to turn the laptop on last.
At this point, the laptop should be projecting onto the screen. If
not, press LAPTOP again on the remote control.

When done, turn off the LCD projector with the hand-held remote by pressing OFF under
Video Proj Pwr. Then turn off the laptop, raise the screen, and return all
equipment to the cabinet.

Using the overhead transparency projector

Lower the
screen by using the controls on the wall.
Controls should be located just to the side of the screen location.
Some rooms have a manually operated pull-down screen.

If the head of the projector is tucked away, pull the retention clip
up and raise the head until it locks into the upright position.
|
|

Place your transparency on the glass surface. It should be
oriented normally.
|
|
4 |
Turn on the projector by pressing the red power button. Your
transparency should be projected onto the screen.
If the fan is blowing but the lamp is out, switch to the spare lamp:
First, turn off the projector. Pull the side clip and open the glass top of
the projector. A lamp switch knob is on the far left. Turn it to
select the spare lamp, close the top, and turn on the power.

If necessary, use the large knob on the head of the projector to adjust the
focus of the image and adjust the head to vertically center the image on the screen.

When done, turn off the projector and raise the screen.

Using the VCR and LCD projector

Under Sources on the hand-held remote, press VCR.
|

Turn on the VCR by pressing
POWER on the front of the VCR
VCR is located in the equipment cabinet.

Insert a tape into the VCR.
|
|
6 |
Use the hand-held remote to control the VCR functions such as PLAY, STOP,
REW, and FF. The VOLUME adjustment is also on the
remote control.
At this point your video tape should be projecting onto the screen
while playing. If
not, press the VCR and/or PLAY button again.

When done, turn off the LCD projector with the hand-held remote by pressing OFF under
Video Proj Pwr. Then turn off the VCR, raise the screen, and return all
equipment to the cabinet.

Using the audio tape recorder

Turn on the audio tape recorder by pressing
the POWER button on the front of the unit (the recorder is located in the equipment cabinet).
If the power is already on, turn it off and back on again to reset the unit
to it's default settings.

Insert a blank audio tape into the recorder.
The tape should switch sides automatically when recording.
|
|
3 |
Press the REC button on the
recorder. The REC and PAUSE buttons should light up, and
if there is talking in the room, the level indicators should be lighting up
also. If the level indicators are not moving while talking is
occurring, adjust the recording level knob.
The microphones are usually located in the ceiling. Recordings in
auditoriums such as Land, Starr, and Wiener must use the wireless
microphones since they have no ceiling microphones. See below for
wireless mic instructions.

When you're ready to begin recording, press PLAY. The tape
wheels should now begin moving.
At this point you are recording the class. To verify, ensure the
PLAY button has a blinking green light and the REC button has a
solid red light.

When you wish to stop recording, press STOP.
|
|

When done, remove your tape by pressing EJECT. Turn off
the audio tape recorder.

Using wireless microphones

Remove the microphone(s) you wish to use from the cabinet. Some rooms
have hand-held mics and lavaliere (clip-on) mics, other rooms have just one
type.

If using a hand-held mic, you may want to use a table-top mic stand.
If using a lavaliere mic, clip it on your shirt/jacket/tie approximately
four
inches below your chin and place the transmitter pack on your belt or in a
pocket.

Turn the mic on by flipping the small gray power switch. Hand-held
mics have the switch on the bottom, lavalieres on the top.
If using more than one mic, be sure to use mics of different color
designations. For example, use a blue and red labeled mic, but not two
blue labeled mics. This prevents interference.

When done, turn off the mics and return them to the cabinet.

Using the 35mm slide projector

Lower the
screen by using the controls on the wall.
Controls should be located just to the side of the screen location.
Some rooms have a manually operated pull-down screen.

Remove the slide projector and slide tray from the cabinet and set it up on the table.
Notice the sliding power switch on the side.
In Wiener and L280 the slide projector is permanently mounted and can be
controlled via the touch-panel at the instructor podium.

Put the slides into the slide tray. (Looking from behind the projector,
they should be upside-down & backwards.)
There should be a locking center ring to keep the slides in place.
|

4 |
Put the slide tray on the slide projector, aligning the 0 (zero) on the tray
with the loading notch 0 on the projector.
|
|
5 |
Turn on the projector lamp by moving the sliding power switch forward.
You can advance the slides forward or backward with the two arrow buttons
located adjacent to the power switch.
Optional A wired remote control should be located in the front
compartment of the projector, which can be connected to a jack on the back
of the unit.

|
6 |
To focus, twist the focus knob near the front of the projector. If using
the remote control, you can also press FOCUS IN or
FOCUS OUT to adjust the focus.

When finished, move the sliding power switch to the FAN ONLY position.
This will allow the bulb to cool while you remove the slide tray.
|
|

|
Return the slide tray to position 0 (zero) and remove it.
Remove your slides from the tray and put the empty tray back onto
the projector.
|
|
9 |
Turn the projector fan off by returning the sliding power switch to it's
OFF position.
|
|

Return the slide projector with tray to the cabinet and raise the screen.

Accessing the Novell network (faculty
and staff members only)

Turn on the computer as you would any computer.
Computer is located in the equipment cabinet.

When the machine boots to the desktop, double-click the Novell Login
icon located on the desktop.
At the Novell login screen, input your username and password, followed by a
period and your context (usually your department):
username example: jsmith.iop.ksg
Enter your password.
Press OK. The network login script should run and you are logged in.

When done, be sure to log out or shut down the computer to protect your
account security.

Using the computer to play CDs

Turn on the computer as you would any computer.
Computer is located in the equipment cabinet.

Use the wireless mouse and keyboard to control the computer. If not
used for a few minutes they may go into sleep-mode, in which case you can
simply click the mouse a few times or press the space bar to respectively
wake up the mouse or keyboard.

3 |
When the computer boots to the desktop, double-click the Real Player icon
located on the desktop. This will load the software to play your audio
CD.
|
|
4 |
Open the CD drive, put your audio CD in, and close the drive.
|
|
5 |
After a few seconds Real Player should automatically begin playing the audio CD.
If it does not start playing automatically, press the large right-arrowed
PLAY button. Use the VOLUME buttons on the room's remote
control to adjust the volume.
If the volume is still too low after turning the remote control volume
all the way up, be sure the volume in Real Player is turned up as far as it
goes. Also check the speaker icon in the system tray on the far bottom
right - single-click the speaker and be sure that the volume is turned up
there also.

When done, close Real Player and eject your audio CD.

Shut down the computer and return all equipment to the
cabinet.

Using the computer to play DVDs

icon located on the desktop. This will load the software to play your
DVD.

Open the CD drive, put your DVD in, and close the drive.

After a few seconds WinDVD should automatically begin playing the DVD.
If it does not, press the PLAY button.
Double-click the movie window to make it full screen. Use the VOLUME buttons on the room's remote control to adjust the
volume.
If the volume is still too low after turning the remote control volume
all the
way up, be sure the volume in WinDVD is turned up as far as it goes.
Also check the speaker icon in the taskbar system tray on the far bottom
right of the screen - single-click the speaker and be sure that the volume
is turned up there also.

When done, close WinDVD and eject your DVD.

When done, turn off the computer first. Then turn off the LCD projector with the hand-held remote by pressing OFF under the
Video Proj Pwr. Raise the screen and return all
equipment to the cabinet.
