STS Fellows Program
The Program on Science, Technology and Society at Harvard hosts a small number of Fellows and visitors each year (see information on current and past Fellows).
Non-stipendiary Fellows
The Program encourages applications from highly qualified young (pre- or post-doctoral) scholars in any field who wish to receive advanced training in Science and Technology Studies in an interdisciplinary, policy-relevant research environment. US non-stipendiary Fellows may be supported by grants from the National Science Foundation or from their home universities. International non-stipendiary Fellows may join the Program with funding from sources such as national and international fellowship competitions, foundation grants, or Fulbright fellowships. Prospective Fellows should contact the STS Program before seeking support from external sources. If there is a good intellectual fit between the applicant's project and STS, the Program will support the grant application as needed and will offer formal affiliation with the Program if the application is successful.
Non-stipendiary Fellows are expected to participate in the Program for at least one semester (about three months), in the fall or spring of an academic year. They may join the Program for up to two years with appropriate external support.
Applicants for non-stipendiary fellowships should contact the STS Program Director, Professor Sheila Jasanoff, with the following information no later than December 15 of the year preceding the academic year of their planned visit:
- A description of research interests and reasons for seeking affiliation with the STS Program
- A supporting letter from an adviser evaluating the applicant's academic performance and standing
- A brief curriculum vitae
Stipendiary Fellows
The STS Program does not normally provide stipends for Fellows except through funded research projects within the Program. However, prospective stipendiary Fellows may seek support from other Harvard programs that fund study in areas of interest to the STS Program. For information on such opportunities, see for example:
Short-Term Visitors
The STS Program will host short-term visits of up to 4-6 weeks duration by scholars with research interests compatible with the mission of the Program. Such visitors come with their own sources of support; they are not formally designated as STS Fellows but may have limited access to Program facilities. They will be expected to present their own work as well as to interact with Program staff and Fellows during their visit. Short-term visits are arranged on an ad hoc basis to suit the needs of individual applicants. Prospective visitors are advised to contact the Program Director in timely fashion to ascertain whether their visits can be accommodated by the Program.
