Biography:

Julia Marton-Lefèvre was born in Hungary and was educated partially in the US and in France. Since September 1997 she has been the Executive Director of LEAD (Leadership for Environment and Development) International, a program initially set up by The Rockefeller Foundation. LEAD, is a not-for-profit global network of national and regional non-governmental organizations, committed to sustainable development. LEAD’s mission is to create, strengthen and support networks of people and institutions promoting change towards sustainable development that is economically sound, environmentally responsible and socially equitable. LEAD carries out its mission through capacity building and issue-oriented action projects.

Before joining LEAD Marton-Lefèvre was Executive Director of the International Council for Science (ICSU), based in Paris. Prior positions have included Programme Specialist in Environmental Education under a joint UNESCO-UNEP Programme. Marton-Lefèvre's academic background is in History, Ecology and Environmental Planning. She is and has been member of a variety of international bodies, editorial boards and working groups concerned with science, environment and development.

Marton-Lefèvre has co-authored numerous books and papers, and has given speeches at meetings and conferences in all parts of the world. In 1999 she received the AAAS Award for International Cooperation in Science. She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society of the United Kingdom.
