Robert F. Sexton has been the Executive Director of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence since its creation in 1983. A Louisville native, he also has been the Deputy Director of the Kentucky Council on Higher Education, an administrator at the University of Kentucky, a professor of history, and a high school teacher.

A 1964 graduate of Yale University, Sexton earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Washington and was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University in 1992 and 1994. The Louisville Courier-Journal wrote that Sexton is Kentucky's "incomparable public policy advocate." He has been recognized widely for involving the public in education, including the Charles A. Dana Award for Pioneering Achievement and honorary degrees from Berea College and Georgetown College.

Dr. Sexton was a founder of Kentucky's Governor's Scholars Program and the Commonwealth Institute for Teachers. He is the founder and president of the Kentucky Center for Public Issues, publisher of The Kentucky Journal, and served as chairman of the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning in Lexington. He serves in numerous Kentucky leadership positions. He is on the boards of the Long-Term Policy Research Center, the Kentucky Institute for Education Research, and is co-chair of Northern Kentucky University Partnerships Steering Committee.

Dr. Sexton also has been president and board member of numerous national organizations, including the American Association for Higher Education and the Coalition for Alternatives in Postsecondary Education. In 1993, U.S. Education Secretary Richard Riley appointed him to the board of the Fund for the Improvement of Post-secondary Education. He also serves on the Education Commission of the States and the boards of Editorial Projects in Education (publishers of Education Week and Teacher Magazine) and the Consortium for Policy Research in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Visiting Fellow of the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University and on advisory groups for the BellSouth, Danforth, and Ford foundations.

The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence is a non-partisan citizens' advocacy group dedicated to the improvement of education for all Kentuckians. The 100 volunteer members and its staff provide information about education through its publications, research, and grassroots organizing effort.
