 Somalia

The death toll now topping 142 dead in Somalia has been rising since the tsunami struck, most from the northeastern Puntland region, with many more expected.  In all, almost 50,000 families have been displaced by the disaster.  The transitional government within the country has set up a special commission to co-ordinate relief services.  In addition, the UN has started distributing relief supplies to the affected families, warning the world not to forget the plight of this small nation.  Not only dealing with tasks of rebuilding, one of the most pressing threats the country is facing right now is a cholera epidemic erupting from cases of acute diarrhea.

Donating to Somalia Relief Initiatives:

Due to the lack of resources available within Somalia, the options for donations are small and general.  The United Nations organizations listed are probably the most reliable for helping donations reach those in Somalia.

UNICEF SOMALIA

Initiatives undertaken include the setting up of sanitation facilities for displaced people and the delivery of relief supplies - including oral rehydration salts, chlorine powder and essential drugs. Water, sanitation, health and education are priorities.

You may choose whether to donate to one of the major field operations, or whether to make a general "unearmarked" donation.

Ururka Bisha Cas (SRCS) is an independent, non-political humanitarian organization that was founded in April 1963. It was then recognized by the ICRC in 1969 and in the same year became a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
