What are the Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy?

Beginning in 2002, the Rappaport Institute established an annual training program on topics of interest to local elected officials. The Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy gather experts and practitioners to provide cutting-edge approaches to policy and management. The free seminars provide overviews of the major issues faced by local government, offer commentary by experts from Harvard and other universities, and an opportunity to interact with state officials about programs offered by the Commonwealth. Subjects covered include: planning and zoning, transportation, housing, municipal finance, capital planning, environment, and parks.

Am I eligible to attend the Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy?

The Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy are for elected officials in the area. If you are an elected public official you may attend the free series. The 2004 - 2005 Seminars in Municipal Governance and Policy will begin on Monday, September 13 at 8 a.m. We still have a few spots left, if you are an elected official interested in attending the 2004 -2005 series, please contact Polly O'Brien at 617-495-5091or email her immediately.

If you are an appointed public official, you may not attend this seminar series. However, we do hold at least two trainings a year for appointed public officials. Each of the 2004 - 2005 Seminars in Municipal Governance and Policy begins at 8 a.m. We ask that you arrive a few minutes before 8 so you can find the meeting location, get any handouts and settle in with your complimentary breakfast. We realize that sometimes you will be late, but we ask that you do not make a habit of arriving late to the sessions. How much of a time commitment is it to attend the Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy?

There are eight regular sessions of the 2004 - 2005 Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy. Each meeting lasts for two hours. We ask that anyone who signs up for the series make a strong attempt to attend all the sessions. But you must attend at least six of the eight sessions to receive formal recognition. We are also holding two optional special seminars that you may attend. Those two sessions can count toward the six sessions. Where does each Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy take place?

Each session takes place at the Kennedy School of Government. Because of some scheduling conflicts we do not meet in the same meeting space each month. Directions will be provided along with an email reminder before each session. Signage will also be hung to guide you to the correct meeting place. We ask that you arrive a few minutes before 8 so you can find the meeting location, get any handouts and settle in with your complimentary breakfast. Where can I park for Seminars on Municipal Governance and Policy?

There are several parking options adjacent to the Kennedy School of Government. There is a free municipal lot that allows two hour parking next to the Harvard Square Hotel on Mt. Auburn Street. A relatively inexpensive parking garage is located across the street from the Taubman Building on Eliot Street as well as parking at the Charles Hotel which is next to the Taubman Building. Finally, the Kennedy School of Government is roughly two blocks away from the Harvard Square Red Line T stop. Directions to each seminar are emailed to you along with a meeting reminder before each session.
