The Research
Steering Committee The HCDP Research Steering Committee, drawn from a number
of schools at Harvard as well as other institutions, meets periodically to consider research projects
which focus on developing practical solutions to acknowledged problems. Current research focuses
on: 1) the development of a new productivity measurement system based on disease
treatment rather than individual inputs of labour and materials; 2) analyses of
the tranformation which has occurred in other critical service industries such
as financial services, airline transportation and safety, education, and the military,
and how it applies to the next stage of health care industry evolution; and 3)
investigation of the relative payoff from fundamental restructuring versus incremental
refinements to the current delivery system.
Members include Ernest Berndt,
Clay Christensen, David Cutler, John D. Donahue, Karen Eggleston, Cara Helfner, and Joseph Newhouse. The research
committee also has a number of outside affiliates including: Joseph J. Minarik,
Senior Vice President, Director of Research, Committee on Economic Development
(CED); and Proctor Reid, Senior Project Officer of the National Academy of
Engineering/Institute of Medicine (NAE/IOM) Committee on Engineering and
Medicine
