Luc Can is Director of International Banking, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), one of the top government-owned banks of Vietnam. Prior to his senior fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School, he was a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow (under a Fulbright exchange program). In 2003, Dr Can was the only Vietnamese to have received the prestigious Australia-Asia Award for his doctorate program. He was also chairman of the Vietnamese Graduates from Australia Club (VGAC), Vice President of Melbourne Overseas Vietnamese Student Association (MOVSA), and President of Monash University Table Tennis Club. He has published a number of articles published in the Vietnam Finance and Money Review (2002), Auckland FMA Conference Proceedings (2006), China Economic Review (2008), Vikalpa (2008). Dr. Can holds an MBA (Finance) and a DBA (Banking) from Monash University, Australia. Dr. Can has received numerous achievement awards for his outstanding academic performance in his university and MBA studies, and for his management role at BIDV. During his senior fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School, he will focus on financial regulation in Vietnam.

Baris Dincer is a Senior Fulbright Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School. Before working as a Lead Consultant to the World Bank Privatization Social Support Project, he worked at the Prime Ministry Privatization Administration in Turkey as an expert dealing with restructuring and privatization projects of formerly state-run Turkish energy and telecommunications sectors. He was member of the team responsible from the restructuring of Turkish electricity sector, UMTS Auction Commitee, and served as a board member to one of the biggest Turkish mining companies. Mr.Dincer’s research focus has been on privatization and regulatory reforms in developing countries and integration of EU energy markets. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Galatasaray University, an MBA in International Management from Bilkent and Pforzheim Universities, and a post graduate diploma in Economic Regulation and Competition from City University of London. Mr. Dincer, a native speaker of Turkish, speaks French and English fluently and has working knowledge of German.

Mark Fagan
linda bilmesMark Fagan is a senior fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. His work focuses on the creation of competitive markets. He has published working papers and articles examining the role of small and medium size enterprises in the economic development of China, the impact of electricity restructuring on electricity prices in the United States, the results of rail freight deregulation in the United States on market share in contrast to the European experience, and the institutional innovation required to support technological innovation. Mr. Fagan is founding partner of the management and consulting firm, Norbridge, Inc, and was Vice President at Mercer Management Consulting. He holds a Masters degree in regional planning and transportation from Harvard University.

  John Foote
bohnetJohn Foote is a returning Senior Fellow doing work in the area of transportation policy, particularly privatization where he is collaborating with Tony Gomez-Ibanez. Prior to coming to the Kennedy School , John was a co-founder and executive vice-president of TransCore, a transportation engineering company, specializing in "intelligent transportation systems and services". Previously he was a principal in Lewis, Foote and Company, a private investment partnership, and a managing director of Chase Manhattan, Asia Ltd, in Hong Kong . He has a bachelors of science in engineering from Cornell University and a master of public administration from The Wharton School.

Chip Feiss

Chip Feiss is a Senior Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government. He is the President of M2 Inc. a  boutique investment advisory and venture capital firm. In addition he was the CEO of Vivid Image Technology and he serves on the boards of a number of  for profit and non-profit corporations and foundations. The author of two books, Chip’s research at the Kennedy School is focused on two distinct areas of interest. The first involves social enterprise and the use of entrepreneurial skills and incentives required to be successful in for profit development projects in Africa and Southeast Asia. The second pertains to rethinking the place of corporations in global life and how through redefining their roles, rights and responsibilities, they can be made to serve a broader public interest which is also essential to their own long term interests. Chip has an MPA from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and an MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

  David Grayson
Mr. Grayson is Chairman, Small Business Consortium and a Partner at Irwin Grayson Associates; he will be affiliated with the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative, researching critical success factors for business-led intermediary organizations in CSR. Mr. Grayson is a former Managing-Director of Business in the Community, a UK-based organization working to improve the impact of business on society with over 750 corporate members employing some 12 million people in over 200 countries worldwide. He remains a part-time director focused on sustainability and small businesses, and chairs the UK's Small Business Consortium, which encourages responsible business practices among small and medium enterprises. The Financial Times has described him as, "one of the UK's most respected voices on business social responsibility." His books include: "Corporate Social Opportunity - Seven Steps to make Corporate Social Responsibility work for your business" and "Everybody's Business" - both with Adrian Hodges. He was co-founder and director of Project North East which has worked on enterprise and small business development in over 40 countries. Grayson was educated at the universities of Cambridge and Brussels and has held Visiting Fellowships with a number of Business Schools.(Non-resident: UK)

  Mark Kramer
culpepperMark Kramer is a Senior Fellow working on the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative with John Ruggie and Jane Nelson. Kramer is currently Managing Director and Founder of the Foundation Strategy Group, LLC in Boston, as well as Chairman and Founder of the Center for Effective Philanthropy, Inc. in Cambridge. He has numerous publications, including several with the Harvard Business Review and Chronicle of Philanthropy. Kramer is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School and holds a Masters from the Wharton School of Finance.

Deirdre Phillips’ research focuses on financial institutions, the degree to which they engage in civic and community endeavors, and the impact of regulation on their level of interest and involvement.  A seasoned government and community relations executive, Deirdre was Managing Director, Government Relations, at Putnam Investments, prior to coming to Harvard. Before that, she served in similar capacities at FleetBoston Financial and BankBoston for nearly 20 years.  She is currently chief strategy officer for The Autism Consortium, a Boston-based multi-institutional collaboration that is funding research and innovation within the context of the developing life sciences arena.  Deirdre has a bachelor of arts in government from Wheaton College.

Joelle Schmitz’s area of expertise is the impact of government regulation on the public and private sectors; she has published and lectured on this subject in Asia, Europe, and across North America.  Schmitz serves in a regulatory position at CSX, a Fortune 200 railroad with 21,000 route-miles in the United States and Canada. Schmitz holds a Masters of Public Policy from Harvard University and was educated, on fellowship, at Johns Hopkins University SAIS, the Harvard Business and Law Schools, and McGill University.  Schmitz has served as a Fulbright Scholar, a policy advisor to the Canadian Prime Minister’s office, and a board member of nonprofit organizations. In her "down" time, Schmitz extreme skis to maintain her competitive ranking as a Giant Slalom ski racer.

John Sherman is a Senior Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government.  John is Vice Chair of the Corporate Responsibility Committee of the International Bar Association and a member of the UN Global Compact Human Rights Working Group.   He recently retired after thirty years as deputy general counsel for National Grid, one of the world’s largest utilities.  John was the company’s top lawyer for litigation, environmental law, and ethics in the US, and for corporate responsibility and human rights globally.  He has written and spoken extensively on the emerging convergence of corporate law, business ethics, and human rights. John’s research at the Kennedy School will focus on the internalization of hard law and soft law into corporate values that drive a company’s human rights conduct; it will build upon the work he did on corporate human rights accountability as National Grid's representative to the Business Leaders Initiative on Human Rights. John is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School, and lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Mario Valdivia

A practitioner from the private sector with interests in governance and CSR. During 1991 Mr. Valdivia co-founded “Excel Chile”, an investment banking firm which was affiliated with “Credit Suisse First Boston.” In 1995 he also founded “Iron Mountain Chile.” He has been a board member at some large Chilean corporations. He also acted as a member of the advisory board of the Catholic Jesuit Order in Chile.  He currently sits at the board of directors of “Multiexport Foods”, one of the largest producers of salmon in the world, and “Farmacias Benavides”, the largest pharmacy chain in Mexico. He holds a Civil Engineering degree from Universidad Católica de Chile, an MBA from The University of Chicago, and an MPA from Harvard University. Sponsored by Professor John Ruggie, Valdivia will be researching issues around corporate social responsibility in the salmon industry in Chile.

  Holly Wise

Through her consultancy practice, Wise Solutions LLC, Holly brings international development, corporate social responsibility, public-private alliance, and business development expertise to corporations, foundations and non-profits.  She teaches enterprise development at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and sits on the advisory boards of GlobalGiving and LivingGoods.  Ms. Wise is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Holly Wise spent 26 years in the foreign service with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), achieving the diplomatic rank of Minister Counselor.  She is the founder and first Secretariat Director of the Global Development Alliance, USAID’s business model that forges strategic alliances between public and private partners in addressing international development issues.  Under her leadership 300 alliances were formed with $1.1 billion in USAID funding leveraging $3.8 billion in private resources for the world’s poor.  In addition to overseas tours in Uganda, Kenya, Barbados, the Philippines and China, Ms. Wise served as USAID chair at the National Defense University where she taught political science, environmental courses, and published research on China. Ms. Wise is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Connecticut College and holds advanced degrees from Yale University and the National Defense University.

  Simon Zadek
Dr Simon Zadek is Chief Executive of the non-profit organization, AccountAbility, the leading organisation internationally advancing accountability innovations that support sustainable development. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani for Government and Business of Harvard University’s Kennedy School, and a ‘Professor Extraordinaire’ at the University of South Africa’s Centre for Corporate Citizenship. He sits on the International Advisory Board of Instituto Ethos, the Advisory Board of Generation Investment Management and is a Member of the Clinton-Dalberg Task Force programme. In 2003 he was named one of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Global Leaders for Tomorrow’ He has authored and co-authored numerous publications and has become a classic in the field, being recognised by the Academy of Management with the ‘Best Book Social Issues Award 2006.

  Bryn Zeckhauser
Bryn's research on decision making will culminate in a co-authored book, How the Wise Decide, to be published this fall by Crown Business.  How the Wise Decide is based on interviews with 21 major CEOs from companies including Goldman Sachs, Starbucks, and American Express and major decision makers including a Supreme Court Justice, the former Secretary of the U.S. Treasury and the Prime Minister of Singapore.  Bryn is a Principal at Equity Resource Investments, a firm that invests in real estate in the United States and Asia.  Prior to ERI, Bryn worked at leading firms including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and one of its portfolio companies and McKinsey & Company.  Bryn graduated from Harvard College and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.
