Collections
The KSG Library's general book collection is small--by Harvard standards--but carefully selected to meet demand. As a member of the Harvard community, you are entitled to access to most of the sixteen million books, hundreds of thousands of serials and countless other materials that can be found in the collections of the largest university library in the world.
Borrowing Library Materials
There are three due dates each year - Sept. 10, Feb. 10, and June 10, depending on when the items were borrowed. Books can be renewed up to five times. However, books are subject to recall after ten days if requested by another borrower. If you need something that has been checked out to someone else, you may request to have the item recalled and be notified when it has been returned. Some materials such as reference books, journals, and microfiche do not circulate. In other Harvard libraries, circulation policies vary. For details, consult the library information pages at Harvard Libraries.
Borrowing by Research Assistants
You are entitled to request full borrowing privileges in your
name for up to three research assistants in all of the Harvard
Libraries. To apply, your RA should take a completed
application form, with your signature, to the Privileges
Desk at Widener Library.
Borrowing by Others
Faculty spouses and domestic partners may have borrowing privileges
in the KSG Library by applying for a KSG Library special borrower's
card. In Widener and the other "College Libraries,"
special borrowers cards are available to the spouses and domestic
partners of all Harvard University officers. Call or visit Widener's
Privileges Desk for details (495-4166, Room 195).
Course Reserves
The library maintains a collection of all required course reading materials, including
at least one
copy of everything distributed through the Course Materials
Office (CMO) . Please note that for materials that are not distributed
by the CMO, the Library needs your reserve list at least a month
before classes begin. Otherwise, reading material may not be
available to students when it is needed. Please keep the Library
apprised of changes to your reading list or increases in the
size of course enrollment as the course progresses. Call or
email Ellen Isenstein ellen_isenstein@ksg.harvard.edu (617 496-1772) with any reserves-related questions or
requests. Reserve requests may be submitted online at http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/library/secure/reserves.
Many course materials, such as government publications and papers
from non-profit organizations are available freely on the Web.
In addition, it is possible to make direct links to articles
from many electronic journals listed in the Harvard Libraries
databases. For details, consult the document: Making
Links on Classpages to Online Journal Articles.
Reference and Research Services
The Library's reference staff can help you navigate the complex array of electronic and print research materials provided by the Harvard libraries. We can assist in identifying and locating research resources, formulating efficient search strategies, and locating specific facts or figures. Consult the "Ask a Librarian" page for different ways of contacting us. The reference staff also offers individualized instruction for you and your assistants on various electronic information services.
Teaching Support
Reference librarians are available for classroom visits to introduce
students to course-related information resources and effective
research techniques. They are also prepared to create various
types of finding aids, including hot linked research guides
for your course pages. Call or email Leslie Donnell (617 495-1302)
or
leslie_donnell@harvard.edu to arrange for customized instruction to fit your students'
specific needs.
Interlibrary Lending/Borrowing
Material that is not in the KSG Library
The library provides to faculty and officers, a retrieval service
for books and journal articles held in participating Harvard
libraries. (Baker, Countway, the Divinity School, Design School,
Gutman, the Law School, Widener, and Tozzer). We
also offer an interlibrary borrowing service from libraries
throughout the world. When a requested item arrives, we
notify you and hold it at the Circulation Desk. Please
allow a week for requested material to arrive from another Harvard
library and a week or two for it to arrive from outside Harvard.

Email Alerting Services
The Library provides the following electronic current awareness services to help you keep up to date with what is being published in your field:
New Books Email Service - Sign up to receive a monthly email letting you know what books we've added to the library in the area of your interest in the previous month.
Social Science Research Network (SSRN) - (SSRN) is devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of social science research and is composed of five specialized research networks in the areas of accounting, economics, financial economics, legal scholarship and management. Email alerts for specific subject areas are available as well as abstracts and full-text for numerous working papers.
Electronic Research Resources
Harvard Libraries
The Harvard Libraries site
is the gateway to the catalog of the Harvard University
libraries as well as a vast assortment of electronic resources
both at Harvard and beyond.
You can access the Harvard Libraries web site from Macs and PC's located in any of the Harvard libraries or from your home or office. Links to Harvard Libraries are on the KSG Library's home page and a number of other Harvard Web sites.
The HOLLIS Catalog describes close to sixteen million print and electronic items provided by Harvard's libraries, including everything catalogued by the KSG library. Some materials in the Harvard library system won't be found in the Hollis Catalog, because they have not been cataloged in a conventional manner. Please consult the Library staff for help in locating these elusive items. You shouldn't assume that Harvard doesn't own something that you can't find.
The Harvard Libraries menu provides a wide choice of electronic resources including the full-text of articles from thousands of journals and newspapers, statistical data, legal materials, and reference sources such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and directories.
The KSG Library Web Site
From here you can renew books, learn more details about the
Library's services, and access our automatic notification service
for tables of contents new books. You can also connect
to the Harvard Libraries site and link to many important Web
resources for public policy. In addition, our home page
also provides access to online services that are available only
to the Kennedy School community.
Please note: A current Harvard ID number and PIN are needed for remote access to the E-Resources collection and for using some of the features of the HOLLIS catalog, such as renewing books and recalling items that are checked out. To get a PIN, go to the Harvard PIN Web site ( www.pin.harvard.edu) and follow the directions from there.
Other Services
Plagiarism Detection
With the easy availability of web-based information of all types,
it is easier than ever for students to plagiarize, intentionally
or not, when writing their papers. In cases of possible
plagiarism, the library staff can help identify key phrases
that may have been copied or paraphrased from another sources
without proper citations. Many search engines offer advanced
search capabilities that can zero in on suspect phrases deep
in a web document. and Harvard licenses a variety of electronic
resources that provide the full-text of hundreds of academic
journals in a searchable format. Using their expert research
skills, KSG reference librarians can search these kinds of resources
to help detect plagiarism in suspect cases. Call
(496-1772) or email Ellen
Isenstein for more information on this.
Photocopying
There are three photocopiers in the Library for faculty, staff,
and student use. They take
Crimson Cash, which is a debit card system used in
many Harvard facilities. Check the Crimson Cash Website for
details on how to set up a department copy card. The library
also maintains a small number of departmental copy cards valued
at $10.00 each. In an urgent situation when it is not possible
for you to deal directly with Crimson Cash, you can obtain one
of these cards at the Circulation Desk using a Harvard account
number.
