Activists Honored

When Alan Gleitsman, founder of the annual Citizen Activist Award, contacted sculptor Maya Lin to design this year’s award, which would be given to people who were trying to reform education, he didn’t know what to expect. A bronze book? A gilded apple? Lin, creator of the Vietnam Memorial and known for being conceptual, came back with a simple square with an oval glass in the middle. “She said that some people can see things more clearly, almost as if they’re magnified,” Gleitsman said, showcasing the piece at the March award ceremony at the Kennedy School. Michelle Rhee MPP 1997 is one of those people. Rhee started the New Teacher Project, a nonprofit focused on improving teaching quality in public schools. She said she was surprised to be chosen. “Especially when you’re doing work like this.”
