FORUM | Hands Joined The European Union should offer membership to all the countries of the western Balkans if the troubled region is to enjoy a stable and prosperous future, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic MPA/ID 2003 said in September on his return to the school.
"The success of one [country] is accompanied by the envy of the others," he said. "This means that we all have to succeed at the same time -- all the western Balkans together joining the very hands that just a few years ago had been at each other’s throats."
FORUM l Needed Fix The country's health care system is "fundamentally broken" and needs more uniformity, transparency, and competition if it is to be fixed, Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt told the Forum in September.
Without reform, the future prosperity of the country will be at stake, he said, pointing to ever-increasing health care costs.
"There's not an economy in the world that can sustain its leadership position devoting that many resources to one thing," Leavitt warned.
FORUM l Shopping Spree The supercharged, bulked-up free enterprise system former Labor Secretary Robert Reich likes to call "supercapitalism" has made shoppers of us -- and democracy is suffering.
Conditioned to look for deals, trained in consumerism, we increasingly approach our civic life as we would a trip to the mall, abandoning democratic institutions when they don't appeal to us rather than doing the work to change them, Reich told the Forum in September.
"Because we're out of the practice of citizenship we're almost at the point where we don't know what it means to be a citizen," he said.
