Creating Faculty Websites

Network Space for Personal Faculty Websites

IT Services Provides web-accessible network space for all faculty members. By saving HTML or other webpages to the M: drive in the www folder, faculty will have a website they can attach to their profile page as well as for general use.

To access your M://www and save HTML files you need to be logged in to the KSG Network. All computers set up by KSG IT Services automatically have the required software to login to our network, any computer provided by IT will allow you to access your site.

Creating your Website

  1. The first step is to check if you have a M://www folder. If you do not see the www folder, you can create one by right clicking your Start menu button on the bottom right of your monitor and selecting Explore. Select the M:// drive and go to File/New/Folder. Name the folder 'www' (no quotes).
  2. Save any html files you have to the www folder, if you do not have any html files you may request a template from the KSG Webmaster. Dreamweaver is the supported software for editing webpages, but it must be purchased (go to our software page for more info). The average cost for Dreamweaver is around $100 with an educational discount.

Note: your homepage should be called "index.htm." Web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox look for this page as the default homepage when they connect to a website.

  3. Check your website by traveling to your web, your pages should appear immediately after they are saved.

The Web Address for your Site

Personal website address have been made so they are easy to remember and handout. To find your website open a browser and go to the KSG homepage. At the end of the KSG address add /fs followed by your network login shortname.

For example, David Ellwoods address is: http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/fs/dellwood/

You might note that after typing this address traveling to the site the web address will change to: http://ksghome.harvard.edu/~dellwood/. This is a standard redirect that IT has created for all personal websites. The redirect has been established to provide faculty/staff with an easy to remember and handout website address.
