Web Services

The It department has several options for the HKS community. We offer: Web Application Hosting- server space on Unix server or Novell server contact FSA or fill out new request form Purchase a copy of Educational Dreamweaver for creating simple websites. Contact FSA If you need help with installing Dreamweaver, and Mary Ann Krebs for assistance with Automated Faculty Profile pages, Course websites, and Dreamweaver support.

Web Design & Standard Website Package for Faculty/Staff

Faculty - In addition to the automatically created Faculty Profile, HKS Faculty members can set up a personal website and host it in their personal network space in their www folder. Faculty members who are interested in creating a site should contact Mary Ann Krebs.

Staff - Staff may create a website on their personal www folder. IT Services will supply the standard HKS template for those who would like it. General HTML support for personal sites, however, is not provided.

Departments - Departments who wish to create a website may meet with IT Services for advice on setting up your site, and HTML support is provided. Departments will be given the HKS template and style sheet as a template for their site.

ITS will support Dreamweaver (not provided by ITS) users. Dreamweaver is a robust software focused on site creation and management.

Fellows - Fellows will be given space on their personal M drive in the www folder to create a site should they wish to do so. As with all materials on personal server space, the site files will be removed when the fellow's employment has ended.

HKS Style requirements:

Font Face should be arial, verdana or tahoma . Standard Font Size: 10 pt.

IT & Harvard Components you can add to your site

HKS Discussion Boards - ITS can provide discussion boards with login for the HKS community, or an unprotected site for general use. Contact your FSA if you are interested in a discussion board.

ListServs - Listservs allow HKS Faculty and Staff to send emails to a large group of people without affecting the servers and slowing down regular HKS mail. Contact your FSA if you'd like to set up a Listserv.


Polls/surveys - HKS has access to both a home grown poll that integrates with your classpage (if you are running one) or a stand alone poll, as well as the ability to add a quick poll to your site.

Community Classpages - IT Services will create an individual site that is very similar to the HKS Classpages for those who are hosting a class that is not a Degree program.

HTML Training

Contact your FSA if you have a problem with your website and would like assistance, Aileen Grunder will make arrangements to help you.

The IT calendar also has occasional HTML training sessions for Faculty/Staff.

Center for Harvard Training and Development http://www.atwork.harvard.edu/training/ctd/ has day long sessions, we also partner with computer-based Element K for online training

New Horizons: Harvard University Employees receive the consortium discount when taking classes at New Horizons, Boston or their Waltham Branch

 

Site Back-Up

A backup of all sites are kept on our server, if you wish to have a previous version of your site, contact your FSA. Both Frontpage and Dreamweaver have reports to help you run your website. Contact your FSA if you have any questions.

 

HARVARD DNS Services

Kennedy School IT services can not provide .harvard.edu site names. We host .ksg.harvard.edu sites. Top level Harvard names require approval by the Provost of Harvard University. See Use of the Harvard Name at the Harvard Provost's website for additional information. To request a .harvard.edu domain name, you will be asked to complete the Provost's webform.
