Creating Faculty Websites
Network Space for Personal Faculty Websites
IT Services Provides web-accessible network space for all faculty members. By saving HTML or other webpages to the M: drive in the www folder, faculty will have a website they can attach to their profile page as well as for general use.
To access your M://www and save HTML files you need to be logged in to the HKS Network. All computers set up by HKS IT Services automatically have the required software to login to our network, any computer provided by IT will allow you to access your site.
Faculty Profiles
It's important to know the difference between a personal website and a faculty "profile." Websites are created on the M://www folder and require an html editor.
Faculty Profiles, on the other hand, are created automatically and connected to the directory. They can be found here: http://ksgfaculty.harvard.edu/faculty/index.asp.
The Profiles are created automatically from data feeds from across various departments at HKS. They can be edited over the web (thus no HTML editing software is required), but are more restrictive than a personal website.
Creating Your Personal Website
- The first step is to check if you have a M://www folder. If you do not see the www folder, you can create one by right clicking your Start menu button on the bottom right of your monitor and selecting Explore. Select the M:// drive and go to File/New/Folder. Name the folder 'www' (no quotes).
- Save any html files you have to the www folder, if you do not have any html files you may request
a template from the HKS Webmaster. Dreamweaver is the
supported software for editing webpages, but it must be purchased (go to our
software page for more info). The average cost for Dreamweaver is around $100 with an
educational discount.
Note: your homepage should be called "index.htm." Web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox look for this page as the default homepage when they connect to a website.
- Check your website by traveling to your web, your pages should appear immediately after they are saved.
Dreamweaver Connection to a Personal Site
To set up Dreamweaver to edit a personal site you can either connect over the KSG network (recommended) or use FTP (WebDAV is not an option).
Connect via the Network
Follow the instructions on the IS Dreamweaver subsite for connecting to an L Drive, however, be sure to enter the proper address for the personal site in step 5 (selecting the Local/Network connection). The remote address will be M:/username/www.
If you are unsure of the remote address you will be saving your webfiles to when editing a personal site, right click on the start button and explore the M drive, if you do not see an option check the F: drive (it will have the same format as above - M:/username/www).
Connect via FTP
Set up a site using the IS Dreamweaver subsite for setting up a site. When you are selecting the remote connection information, enter the following:
Access: FTP
FTP Host: ksghome.harvard.edu
Host directory: www/
Login: .username.novellcontext.ksg
Password: (use your Novell password, not your Intranet password)
Please note that the login name must start with a period, as illustrated above, and that you must know your Novell context. If you are unsure of your context you can right-click on the novell icon in your taskbar and click the advanced button. The context will appear in the drop down.
The Web Address for your Site
Personal website address have been made so they are easy to remember and handout. To find your website open a browser and go to the HKS homepage. At the end of the HKS address add /fs followed by your network login shortname.
For example, David Ellwood's address is: http://www.ksg.harvard.edu/fs/dellwood/
You might note that after typing this address traveling to the site the web address will change to: http://ksghome.harvard.edu/~dellwood/. This is a standard redirect that IT has created for all personal websites. The redirect has been established to provide faculty/staff with an easy to remember and handout website address.
