Setting up your New HKS Account
Welcome New Faculty/Staff
Welcome to the Kennedy School of Government. This page will acquaint you with the many resources offered by the Information Technology Department.
HKS is a Windows environment. The Information Technology Services Department provides desktop support to all faculty and staff, as well as network connectivity to the Harvard high speed network. All faculty and staff get both network and email accounts. Each faculty and staff member will be assigned to a Field Service Analyst who provide the first level of support.
Getting Started
IT Policies - Review the IT Policies. The 'Policy' menu item above will show helpful and important information about :
- Quotas
- Support Agreement & IT Responsibilities
- Responsible Use of Network and E-mail Accounts
- Information for buying new machines for HKS includes links to IBM discounts and minimum standards
Novell Network Account
Novell Accounts give users access to HKS servers, which hold most of HKS shared department data as well as several HKS websites. Each user is assigned a short username and password. The password must be changed the first time a user logs onto the system and then every six months.
Your Network Account also has what is refered to as a 'context.' Essentially it is the group that you are associated with at HKS. The context allows us to grant rights to the shared department folders on the HKS network. You can find out your context by clicking the advanced button on your Novell login client. Knowing your context will help you log in to other computers that have users who are not in your group context, as well as with a few other advanced operations.
Lotus Notes Account/Email Account
Lotus Notes accounts give users access to E-Mail, calendaring, and various Notes databases. Your Lotus Notes account will use a different username and password than your Novell Network account. Notes usernames are created with the full first and last name. Each user is assigned a password that should be changed to something private.
Your Email Address Initially it will have the form george_washington@ksg.harvard.edu. If you are staff or faculty and have a Harvard ID, you may request an additional address called a Harvard Alias which has the from george_washington@harvard.edu. To request an alias, send your Harvard ID number to your FSA. It may take up to 48 hours before the alias is active.
HKS Intranet Account
These accounts are separate from the email accounts and give users access to internal web pages for the HKS community only. They use the short username and a password that is changed independently from the email password.
The Next Steps
Once your accounts have been created you should be able to access the following links using your username and your default password (some links require log in). The links below discuss some of the fundamental services IT provides to the HKS community.
