Moving your Computer
Moving? Your Computer Needs a Little Attention. - A few things to do before - during and after.
Ahead of Time
Once you know where you will be located, walk through the area and think about where you want the computer located. Make sure the location you pick has access to electricity and a phone/network jack. If you currently use a modem or a fax machine, you will also need a modem (analog) phone line.
If you have a shared or networked printer, you will also need an additional electrical outlet and network jack for that equipment. If new jacks are being installed or new computers are being ordered, please notify your FSA ahead of time. Keep in mind that there is significant lead-time involved with getting new jacks and computers.
Contact your FSA as soon as you know actual move dates so they can make plans to assist ( especially important when entire departments are relocating)
Prepare for the Move
Be sure you collect all your computer related materials:
- CD's
- Diskettes
- Manuals
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Cables - The cables on most computers are color coded making it easy to reattach everything correctly. If your computer is different, be sure to label cables indicating where they should be re-connected after the move.
- Include the Network cable from the computer to the wall jack. Keep this separate from the phone cable.
- Zip drives / tape drives
- Surge suppressor/Power strip Pre-pack all items that will not be needed prior to the move.
Moving Day
Backup your critical files. Set aside a packing box for items that will be needed immediately after the move with cables and accessories to set up the system and get back on line. Mark this box clearly.
Shut down computer and disconnect all the cables - mark them appropriately if not color coded. If you have more than one machine in your area, please mark the items distinctively so they can be matched when setting up in the new space.
After the Move
Set up the computer - using the appropriately marked cables and locations. Be sure to plug the network cable in the data jack - Not the phone side. Data has a "D" or "DATA" embossed and is usually the receptacle on the bottom. There should no problem getting started once the system is connected. Remember - No spare parts or cables unless they were spares to begin with.
If you have a problem or need assistance, please contact with your FSA.
