What do you do?

The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations is an interdisciplinary research center at the John F. Kennedy School of Government (KSG) at Harvard University. Based in Cambridge, the Center seeks to expand understanding and accelerate critical thinking about nonprofit organizations and civil society among scholars, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public.

The Center aims to illuminate the vital role the voluntary nonprofit sector plays in aiding societies to discover and accomplish important public purposes. Faculty and researchers at the Center help equip policy makers and nonprofit leaders with the knowledge and tools they need to develop to their full potential. The Centers name recognizes the national significance of Rita and Gustave Hausers activities on behalf of nonprofit organizations, and their achievements at Harvard.

Do you award degrees?

No. The Hauser Center itself does not offer a degree program. However, within both its Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program, and the Masters in Public Policy (MPP) program, Kennedy School of Government students can choose a concentration that is tailored to nonprofit work.  Additionally, the Hauser Center is a resource for nonprofit information and connections for students and individuals involved with nonprofit organizations outside Harvard.

For further information on programs and application, please contact the admissions office directly at 617-495-1155 or via email at: admissions@ksg.harvard.edu

The quickest and most effective way for a student to get information about the Hauser Center is to check out our website. Otherwise, come into the office and see what the center has to offer. There is a reading room with plenty of resources and materials. Some you can even take with you!

There is a Nonprofit PIC student group. It is a great way to get involved. Taking nonprofit-related courses and getting to know your professor, fellow students and others interested in the nonprofit world are other ways to be involved.

How big is the nonprofit sector?

The American nonprofit sector grows steadily each year at a rate of between 4 - 6 percent. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data for 1997 indicate that there are over 1,230,000 nonprofits classified as 501(c) organizations. Close to 700,000 of them are 501(c)(3) public charities. The IRS acknowledges, though, that an unknown number of the organizations are inactive but still accounted for. The figures do not include churches which do not have to file with the IRS. Also, we can assume that additionally there is a great number of active small nonprofits which, mainly

due to the size of their programs, are not officially required to file for their tax-exempt status nor process their Form 990. The nonprofit sector employs nearly 11 million Americans (about 7 percent of the workforce). In 1996, the nonprofit sector revenues rose to over $670 billion which corresponds to close to 9 percent of the gross domestic product. Dues and fees were the greatest generators of income (nearly 40 percent), followed by government payments (close to 32 percent), private contributions (close to 20 percent),

and other sources (about 10 percent).*
