This research seminar is about the mechanics of representation and the consequences of various reform proposals both within the United States and other countries. Students will read foundational works about political parties and political behavior and apply insights from that literature to current proposals, including how votes are cast and counted; how parties and candidates gain access to the political process; and how campaigns are funded. A substantial research paper accounts for most of a student’s grade in this seminar.
