TIPS ON READING THE EVALUATION REPORTS
- Questions:
Each mean on the course evaluation report
corresponds to a question on the “Student Course Rating Form.”
Students are given 20 minutes in class at the end of the
term to complete the form.
-
- Number of Respondents (N): This is the total number of
students that responded to each question. Different N's for the same course reflect differences in the
number of students answering each question.
Most course enrollments are larger than indicated by the
number of respondents. There are a variety of reasons for this:
not all students will fill out an evaluation form and some do not
respond to all questions.
-
- Mean: The
mean is the average of all the scores reported.
In most cases the students can choose a number between 1
and 5. In the case
for the two questions on “workload and benefit,” students
choose between 1 and 3. For
these questions the mean will appear lower in comparison to the
other questions that are based on a 5-point scale.
-
- Missing Data: Sometimes students fail to read the
instructions and select more than one answer.
All such responses are treated as missing data.
Faculty: Many courses change Faculty from year to year, the
Faculty listed are those who taught in the Academic
Year listed.
